Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly compete against one another. He had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
